My wife, Lian, and I didn't grow up in Minneapolis, but it feels like home for all kinds of reasons. It helps that some of the best writing and publishing in the world is happening in the Twin Cities.
I grew up in Oregon, Germany, California, and England, went to College in St. Paul at Macalester College, and completed an M.F.A. at the University of Maryland. Lian and I also lived for extended periods in Madison, Wisconsin, and L.A.. These places show up in my writing.
I was fortunate to be able to participate in writing workshops with great classmates and teachers; but that was a while ago and since then I've followed a path of working on my writing outside the classroom or group setting, though I've had the support of many friends. Whether intentionally or not (actually a little of both), it's been a journey of continually rediscovering within myself my motivation for reading and writing.
